Alumni Giving

IHP depends on generous gifts from Alumni like you to support our non-profit mission, which includes providing a unique, inclusive residential community for more than 1,000 students, scholars and professional trainees from around the world each year and presenting high-quality arts, cultural, language and Resident Life programs.

Please consider giving a gift to International House Philadelphia today. There are several ways to support our organization.

Outright cash contributions are the simplest to make, and enable International House to take advantage of immediate opportunities. Under present tax law, gifts of cash are deductible for the full amount of the gift, unless they exceed 50 percent of your adjusted income. In this case, you may not deduct the full amount in a single year. The excess can be carried forward for up to five more years.

Join IHP’s Alumni Council in supporting the recently established Resident Emergency Fund, intended to provide limited emergency financial assistance to select IHP residents on a case-by-case basis who are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses due to an emergency situation such as an accident, illness, death of a family member, or fire damage, among others. This is your opportunity to help IHP provide residents with more than advice and moral support in the unfortunate case of an emergency. Let’s change this together. Make a gift today that will help a resident tomorrow.

When you make a donation to the IHP Resident Emergency Fund, you help us support residents in all aspects of their residential experience, including when they encounter hard times. Every little bit helps and it is a great opportunity to make your mark on IHP, and make a direct impact on the lives of others.

Many donors prefer to fund their contributions through gifts of appreciated securities.

Gifts of appreciated securities, which you have owned for at least six months, may be deducted for the full fair market value at the time of the gift. This deduction can be claimed provided it does not exceed 30 percent of your adjusted gross income, with a five-year carryover for any excess. No capital gains tax is levied on the appreciation.

Unlike annual gifts that are made from current income, planned gifts are usually made from capital assets.

In general, planned gifts – legally committed to International House during the donor’s lifetime — are those in which you retain some personal interest, such as the right to use the property or to receive income from the gift. Planned gifts cannot be put to use by International House until some time later, usually after the death of the named benefactors.

International House encourages these gifts because they provide an endowment for the future. You may find that you are in a position to make a larger gift by carefully selecting the most appropriate form of contribution. For example, by reserving the right to receive income from a gift, it is possible to protect an estate and provide for family members. A charitable deduction is allowed for part of the value of the assets transferred.

Older friends and alumni may prefer the planned gift, or they may choose to combine a planned with an outright contribution. The most suitable kind of gift depends on the donor’s circumstances. International House will be pleased to provide any assistance you or your financial advisers require in determining how to maximize the impact of your generosity.
