Projector performance and workshop from Bruce McClure

Friday September 16, 2011 – Bruce McClure performs tonight and gives a talk tomorrow. McClure is one of an increasing number of live artists working directly with visual projection to create abstract forms using playback machines themselves. This is the kind of work we’ve been featuring in our “Wave Currents” series, from artists using film projectors to digital means to create live light and video displays. McClure uses multiple simple, antiquated 16mm classroom film projectors to create flickering patterns and shapes, and he amplifies the sound of his film loops before processing it through a bank of pedals. This video is a great introduction to what he does.

And here’s a clip of a live piece:

Tickets for tonight are here. This program is co-presented by the Philadelphia Independent Film & Video Association, the Film and Media Arts Department at Temple University and College of Art and Design at the University of the Arts.

For a bit of preview, some lengthy and insightful interviews are here and here.
