Saverio Crispo (Francesco Scianna), a dashing fictional film idol, has been dead for 10 years but still exerts a powerful magnetism. In the Italian comedy Latin Lover, the women in his life gather in his hometown for a memorial service and reunion attended by his two wives, Ramona (Marisa Paredes) and Rita (Virna Lisi, in her final screen appearance) and assorted offspring. He left behind five daughters from relationships in different countries.

The movie, filled with comic intrigue, has an outstanding performance by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, who plays his French daughter. Saverio’s legacy is commemorated in witty bogus film clips in which the star suggests a composite of Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman and other vintage Italian screen heartthrobs.

This free admission film festival is made possible thanks to the support of New Italian Cinema Events (NICE).

The Cinema Studies Program and the Center for Italian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with International House Philadelphia, present the 2016 edition of New Italian Cinema. The festival has been curated by Nicola M. Gentili (Penn, Cinema Studies) and aims at presenting very recently released Italian feature films.
